NEW FRIENDS FOR SUSAN

A mild, slow-moving little story about a young Japanese American girl, her family, friends, and dress-up occasions. Susan Susaki, who lived with her father and mother in California, was terribly sad when her school had to close, but moving to a new school, meant, as she discovered, wonderful new friends, good times and surprises in the form of festivals and class activities. Also there was great excitement the time her cousin Sumiko came from Japan. A quiet, mannerly account of a little girl's third-grade ups and downs, perhaps a bit too soft-toned in episode for sectional easy reading. Unexpectedly formalized sketches by Henry Sugimoto. Suitable for advanced second and third year reading.
