THE MAGIC CHALK

A delightful patchwork of fancy, puzzles, poetry, and nonsense, this is the story of a little boy, who with a bit of chalk, conjures up a world. John, with his magic companion, Sofus, weave in and out of a world of picaresque adventures, their movements clearly indicated by the deft drawings of Malvin Neset. At every step the reader's visual sense is challenged, here by a puzzle drawing, there by an expressive abstract curve. Translated from the Norwegian by Susanne Bergendahl, this is an inventive world peopled with characters--animal and human--designed to consistently amuse and surprise.
