Bob Dylan unexpectedly found himself at the largest book fair in the world, where he tried, without success, to find a horror press that published one of his favorite books.

Dylan, the legendary singer-songwriter and Nobel Prize laureate, posted about his experience on the social platform X. “At the hotel in Frankfurt there was a publishing convention and every room was taken, parties all night,” he wrote. “I didn’t know there were so many book publishers in the world. I was trying to find Crystal Lake Publishing so I could congratulate them on publishing The Great God Pan, one of my favorite books. I thought they might be interested in some of my stories. Unfortunately it was too crowded and I never did find them.”

Dylan was referring to Arthur Machen’s 1894 novella, a cult classic that scandalized readers upon its publication but influenced writers such as H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. The novella was republished by Crystal Lake in 2019.

Dylan was in Frankfurt on his seemingly never-ending Rough and Rowdy Ways tour, which began in 2021. He played three shows in the city’s Jahrhunderthalle.

His post on X follows a handful of others that he’s written over the past few weeks, including ones in which he mourned the death of comedian Bob Newhart, recommended the New Orleans restaurant Dooky Chase, and related an encounter with a player for the Buffalo Sabres hockey team.

Crystal Lake’s founder and CEO Joe Mynhardt reacted to Dylan’s post on the publisher’s website, noting that they were not actually at the Frankfurt Book Fair. “We’ve reached out to Bob’s team, so the ball is now in their court,” Mynhardt said. “I’m pretty sure we’d all love to read those stories. Plus, who doesn’t love a great underdog story? Whatever happens, this has been pretty cool.”

It remains to be seen whether Dylan and Crystal Lake will eventually connect. Though if they do, it should really be at Dunkin’.
