New York Times journalists Kate Conger and Ryan Mac will explore Elon Musk’s purchase of the social media website Twitter—since rebranded as X—in a new book, Axios reports.

Penguin Press will publish the technology reporters’ Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter this summer. The press describes the book as “the full and shocking inside story of Elon Musk’s unprecedented hostile takeover of Twitter and the forty-four-billion-dollar deal’s seismic political, social, and financial fallout.”

Musk, the South African–born businessman known for founding the company SpaceX and for his role as CEO of the electric vehicle corporation Tesla, acquired Twitter in 2022, making a series of controversial changes to the company, including massive layoffs and loosening its content restrictions.

His reign at X has led many companies to pull advertisements from the site in response to his polarizing posts, which have been characterized as antisemitic and transphobic.

Penguin Press says Conger and Mac will “follow the inner workings of the company as Musk lays siege to it, first from the outside as one of its most vocal users, and then finally from within as a contentious and mercurial leader. Musk has shared some of his version of events, but Conger and Mac have uncovered the full story through exclusive interviews, unreported documents, and internal recordings at Twitter following the billionaire’s takeover.”

In a post on X, Mac announced news of the book, writing, “Elon blocked me on Twitter. Then he suspended me for reporting on it. Between all that, @kateconger and I decided to write a book on him, his takeover, and everything that happened.”

Character Limit is scheduled for publication on Sept. 17.
