The daughter of late, legendary fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett has pushed back on claims that her father would have opposed equality for transgender people.

Rhianna Pratchett reacted to a tweet that read, “I note that having not got over Atwood’s betrayal, the GCs are trying to recruit Terry Practhett posthumously presumably because they know he can’t contradict them.” (“GC” is a reference to “gender critical,” a term used by self-styled feminists who believe that transgender women aren’t women.)

“This is horrifying,” Rhianna Pratchett tweeted. “My father would most definitely not be a GC if he was still alive. Read. The. Books.”

Terry Pratchett’s friend and collaborator Neil Gaiman backed Rhianna Pratchett up, writing, “Terry was wise and Terry was kind. Terry understood that people were complicated, contradictory and, always people, and that people can and do change. As @rhipratchett says, he would have had no time for this nonsense.”

Screenwriter John Rogers agreed, a bit more forcefully, tweeting, “I’m an infamously even-tempered man, but if you take Terry Pratchett’s name in vain for some small-minded bigoted fuckwittery I will push you down a set of fucking stairs and laugh at the bounce.”

Responding to a Pratchett fan who suggested that gender-critical feminists haven’t actually read the author’s books, Rhianna Pratchett wrote, “If you’re desperately trying to recruit the dead to your cause then you should probably have a big think about just what you’re supporting.”
