David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon are the screenwriters for an as-yet-untitled fourth Matrix movie, along with director Lana Wachowski, according to a Variety report.
Both authors previously plotted and wrote scenes for the second season of Netflix’s sci-fi TV series Sense8, which Wachowski co-created; they also appeared in front of the camera, portraying themselves in one episode. In addition, Mitchell, Hemon, and Wachowski co-wrote Sense8’s two-hour series finale, released in 2018. (Hemon wrote about his Sense8 experiences in a 2017 article for The New Yorker.)
The new Matrix film, which is expected to begin production early next year, will see stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning, as well as Wachowski, who co-wrote and -directed the previous films in sci-fi/action series: The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), and The Matrix Revolutions (2003).
She also co-wrote and -directed a 2012 movie adaptation of Mitchell’s 2004 novel Cloud Atlas (which received a Kirkus star). Mitchell himself appeared in this film in a minor role.
Hemon received starred Kirkus reviews for his novels Nowhere Man (2002) and The Lazarus Project (2008), and for his most recent works, the back-to-back memoirs My Parents: An Introduction and This Does Not Belong to You, published in June. His only previous motion-picture screenwriting credit is for the 2014 Croatian/German comedy film Love Island—although he did write a 2015 comic novel, The Making of Zombie Wars, about a struggling screenwriter.
