Bolu Babalola’s Honey & Spice is headed to the big screen, Deadline reports.
Babalola’s novel, published in 2022 by William Morrow, tells the story of Kikiola “Kiki” Banjo, who hosts a show on her college radio station and falls for Malakai Korede, a film student working on a documentary about romance. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus praised the book, which was a Reese Witherspoon book club pick, as “smooth, sophisticated, and sexy.” Babalola published a sequel to the novel, Sweet Heat, in September.
Working Title Films, the production company known for films including Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Notting Hill, and Les Misérables, is developing the adaptation, to be written by Babalola.
“Since Honey & Spice was published, I’ve been so appreciative of the incredible response from readers and the industry alike,” Babalola told Deadline. “As my debut novel, Kiki and Malakai’s story is so close to my heart, and I can’t wait to adapt their trials and tribulations in love for cinema audiences with the master of romantic films: Working Title.”
Babalola shared news of the adaptation on the social platform X, writing, “So excited to bring HONEY & SPICE to the big screen! A dream come true to work with the best to ever do it in the romcom biz! I have been keeping this a secret for some time but it has been sweet having this treasure for myself for a little while. Team KiKai let’s go!”
