Matt Bomer will star in a series based on Thomas Mallon’s Fellow Travelers, Deadline reports.
Bomer, known for his work on shows like Chuck and White Collar and in films including Magic Mike and The Boys in the Band, will also executive produce the series. Daniel Minahan (Halston) will direct the first two episodes of the show.
Mallon’s 2007 novel follows Tim Laughlin, a young Senate aide and ardent anti-communist, who is in a secret relationship with Hawkins Fuller, a closeted State Department official. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus praised the book as “an ambitious, absorbing caper that’s smartly paced, tough-minded and infused with emotional depth.”
Bomer will play Fuller in the limited series, which is written by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, The Painted Veil) and will air on Showtime.
Jana Winograde, Showtime’s entertainment president, said the network is “beyond thrilled” to work with Bomer and the show’s crew.
“The series delivers us directly into an insider world of Washington rife with national consequences, while drawing out the intimate moments that are profoundly personal and often heartbreaking,” Winograde said.
Bomer announced the show on Instagram, writing, “Very excited, and so grateful to everyone at @showtime and @fremantle that this show is finally a reality.…Thank you @ronnyswaner and @robbierogers for bringing me along.”
