Kyle MacLachlan will tell the story of his life and career in a new memoir, People magazine reports.

Crown will publish the actor’s Fictional Selves in the fall. In the book, the press says, MacLachlan “shares his utterly original account of his offbeat journey in Hollywood, his battles with fear and fame, and the projects that shaped him—and created a cult icon.”

MacLachlan, a native of Washington state, made his Hollywood debut in 1984, playing the starring role in David Lynch’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. He teamed up with Lynch again in 1986 for the movie Blue Velvet, and then in Lynch’s cult-favorite television series Twin Peaks, which premiered in 1990. MacLachlan’s performance as the offbeat, coffee-loving FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper made him a screen icon. He went on to star in films including The Doors, Showgirls, and Tesla, and television series such as Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives, and Portlandia.

Crown says that in MacLachlan’s memoir “brings us into the mind of one of the most distinctive actors of his generation, offering profound insights on collaborators like David Lynch, Laura Dern, Dennis Hopper, Anthony Hopkins, and more. Featuring lessons learned the hard way about ambition, love, and fatherhood, this memoir is an honest look into the remarkable—and often unpredictable—life of an enduring and endearing Hollywood icon.”

Fictional Selves is slated for publication on Oct. 6.
