RuPaul will tell the story of his life in a new memoir.
Dey Street Books will publish the iconic drag queen’s The House of Hidden Meanings next year. The press describes the book as “a brutally honest, surprisingly poignant, and deeply intimate memoir of growing up Black, poor, and queer in a broken home to discovering the power of performance, found family, and self-acceptance.”
RuPaul, a San Diego native, first rose to prominence in the nightclub scenes of Atlanta and New York. In 1993, he released the album Supermodel of the World, which spawned a hit single, “Supermodel (You Better Work).” He became a model for MAC Cosmetics, and hosted a VH1 talk show, The RuPaul Show.
He is best known today as host of the reality competition show RuPaul’s Drag Race, which has aired since 2009 and become a staple of American popular culture. He is the author of three previous books, including an autobiography, Lettin It All Hang Out.
RuPaul announced his new book on Instagram. “Writing this book left me gooped, gagged and stripped raw,” he wrote. “I’ve learned that vulnerability is strength, but so far, all I feel is nervous as hell, yet super excited to share it with y’all. When all is said and done, it’s just me, Ru.”
The House of Hidden Meanings is scheduled for publication on March 5, 2024.
