Darius Rucker will tell the story of his life and musical career in a new memoir, People magazine reports.

Dey Street will publish the country and rock singer-songwriter and guitarist’s Life’s Too Short in May. The publisher describes Rucker’s book as “a raw, heartfelt memoir…told through the remarkable stories of the music that coursed through his life.”

Rucker was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and was raised there, and attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia. It was there that he met the musicians with whom he would form Hootie & the Blowfish, the rock band that made their debut in 1994 with the hit album Cracked Rear View.

He made his solo debut in 2002 with Back to Then and, six years later, released his first country album, Learn To Live. Six more albums followed, most recently Carolyn’s Boy in 2023.

In the book, Dey Street says, Rucker “recounts the unlikely ascent of his band and wild tales of his road-hardened life—one filled with stumbles, missteps and battles with demons, but ultimately resulting in triumph.”

Rucker announced the news of his memoir on Instagram, writing, “If I look back at my life and try to see into my past, everything seems blurry. But then I lean in and start to hear something. Melodies. Chords. Harmonies. Lyrics. This book is the story of my life as told through twenty-three songs that took me away, soaring, starting at ground level, living in a poor but happy home, never wanting for much more, enjoying what I had, even when times got tough, because I had my escape, my refuge, my music.”
