Daniel Handler’s next book will be “part memoir, part how-to, part critical inquiry,” the author announced on Instagram.

Liveright will publish Handler’s And Then? And Then? What Else? this spring. The press describes the book as “a bold, candid, vulnerable, and entertaining memoir of a literary life.”

Handler is best known for his popular A Series of Unfortunate Events children’s novels, written under the pen name Lemony Snicket. The 13 books in the series, known for their dark humor and goth sensibility, debuted in 1999 with The Bad Beginning and have inspired a television series and a film. He is also the author of several novels for adults, most recently Bottle Grove.

And Then? And Then? What Else?, Liveright says, “traces Daniel Handler’s sometimes challenging and often amusing path toward one of the most spectacularly successful writing careers of the twenty-first century.”

Handler posted a video on Instagram discussing his new book in a graveyard in Oxford, England. “How did I get here?” he says. “This is something I think about a lot.…[The book] is about the journey that I’ve had as a reader and a participant in the world of literature. I have been through hardship, I’ve been through inspiration, I’ve gotten in trouble, I’ve gotten kind of famous. It’s been a strange journey, and the journey for me has been made of my appreciation of literature.”

And Then? And Then? What Else? is scheduled for publication on May 21.
