Malcolm Gladwell will address the topic of American gun violence in a book coming later this year.
Little, Brown will publish The American Way of Killing this fall, the press announced in a news release. It calls the book “an incisive investigation into gun violence, America’s deadliest and most polarizing crisis.”
Gladwell, a longtime staff writer for the New Yorker, published his first book, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, in 2000; it quickly became a bestseller. His other books include Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking; David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants; and Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don’t Know. His most recent book, Revenge of the Tipping Point: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering, was published in 2024.
The American Way of Killing expands upon reporting he did for his podcast, Revisionist History, about gun violence in the U.S. In the book, Little, Brown says, Gladwell “walks the reader through a series of stories drawn from every corner of American life and culture—from emergency rooms to Hollywood westerns to big-city police departments to Supreme Court oral arguments—looking for answers.”
An audiobook edition, released by RB Media, will also be available.
The American Way of Killing is scheduled for publication on Sept. 29.
