Matt Haig is taking readers back to the world of The Midnight Library with a new novel coming in 2026.

Viking will publish Haig’s The Midnight Train next spring, the press announced in a news release. It calls the book a “magical, time-travelling love story.”

The Midnight Library, published by Viking in 2020, follows Nora Seed, who travels through the titular library, a mysterious collection of books that tells readers what their lives would have been like had they made different decisions.

The novel was a massive bestseller, as well as a pick for the Good Morning America book club. StudioCanal is developing a film adaptation of the book.

The Midnight Train, Viking says, is a standalone novel, but “contains all the heartwarming hallmarks of The Midnight Library, and careful readers may spot a notable returning cameo appearance.” It will follow Wilbur, who is desperate to return to the past to be with his wife, Maggie, and must decide whether to risk everything in order to relive his bygone days.

Haig shared news of his new novel on Instagram, giving fans a chance to be selected as the one reader who will receive an advance copy of the book. “Simply comment or tag someone who would like it for a chance to read The Midnight Train MONTHS before publication,” he wrote.

The Midnight Train is scheduled for publication on May 26, 2026.
