Macmillan will no longer publish a middle-grade novel after its co-author was accused of grooming and abusing one of his former high school students, Publishers Weekly reports.

Henry Holt Books for Young Readers scrapped plans to publish The Crooked Door, a horror novel by Brad McLelland and Louis Sylvester, following reports that Sylvester had an inappropriate relationship with a teenage girl while teaching in Texas.

The allegations were revealed in Keep This Between Us, a Hulu documentary series from producer Cheryl Nichols, although Sylvester’s name isn’t mentioned in the show as the teacher who allegedly groomed Nichols. A logline for the first episode of the series reads, “As an adult, Cheryl reexamines an inappropriate relationship she had with her high school teacher, a phenomenon she soon realizes is nationwide.”

In a tweet earlier this month, author and illustrator Erin Entrada Kelly wrote, “I’m watching #KeepThisBetweenUs, a documentary about Louis Sylvester, a high school teacher who apparently groomed and abused a high school student. I was disturbed to learn that he has co-authored several MG novels, one of which is being released next year.”

Sylvester’s name was subsequently removed from the cover of the novel. Then, last week, McLelland tweeted a statement reading in part, “Based on many conversations with my family and those whose opinions I have always trusted, I have made the decision not to move forward with the publication of the book.” McLelland has since made his Twitter account private.

In a statement to Publishers Weekly, Holt confirmed the book’s publication had been canceled, writing, “Brad McLelland has decided not to go forward with the publication of The Crooked Door. We understand and respect his decision and we continue to support his work.”
