Hugh Howey’s science fiction book series, Wool, will be adapted into a TV series starring Rebecca Ferguson, Deadline reports.

Ferguson, known for her work in the Mission: Impossible movies and films such as Florence Foster Jenkins and The Girl on the Train, will also serve as an executive producer for the series, which was ordered by Apple TV+.

Howey’s book series was launched in 2011 and tells the story of the residents of a subterranean silo, fighting to survive after a global apocalypse. It came to an end in 2013 with the novel Dust.

Ferguson has been cast as Juliette, an engineer in the underground city, according to Deadline. In addition to Ferguson, other executive producers will include Howey, screenwriter Graham Yost, director Morten Tyldum, Remi Aubuchon, Nina Jack, and Ingrid Escajeda.

The Wool series was almost adapted twice before, once as a movie and once as a series. In an 2015 interview with Kirkus, Howey revealed that his first choice to play Juliette was Charlize Theron, but he saw her casting as unlikely, given that she’d just starred in another dystopian film, Mad Max: Fury Road.

On Twitter, Howey cautioned fans that not all series projects come to fruition.

“Some context here, because I’ve kept so much of this secret,” he tweeted. “We’ve been working on this for over two years. All 10 episodes are written. The cast is set. Filming starts this summer.”

“But it still might not happen,” he concluded, adding a smirking face emoji.
