Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Marriage Plot is headed to the small screen with Sadie Sink on board to star, Deadline reports.
Eugenides’ novel, published in 2011 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, tells the story of Madeleine Hanna, a college student in the early 1980s who falls for fellow student Leonard Bankhead; complicating things is the presence of Mitchell Grammaticus, who also has feelings for Madeleine. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the novel, which was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, “Dazzling work—Eugenides continues to show that he is one of the finest of contemporary novelists.”
Sink, known for her roles in the series Stranger Things and the film The Whale, will star in the FX limited series adaptation and will also executive-produce. The series will be written by Will Arbery (Succession, Sacrifice) and directed by Hiro Murai (Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith). Other executive producers include Arbery, Murai, Eugenides, and actor Jason Bateman.
This is not the first time Eugenides’ work has been adapted for the screen. His 1993 debut novel, The Virgin Suicides, formed the basis for a 1999 film directed by Sofia Coppola and starring James Woods, Kathleen Turner, and Kirsten Dunst. And his 1996 short story “Baster” was adapted into the 2010 film The Switch, directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon and starring Bateman and Jennifer Aniston.
