Emma Thompson is returning to the world of Jane Austen’s Dashwood sisters.
The actor is producing and starring in an Audible Original drama titled Becoming Meg Dashwood, a sequel to Austen’s 1811 classic, Sense and Sensibility, Deadline reports.
Thompson wrote the screenplay for Ang Lee’s 1995 film adaptation of Sense & Sensibility and starred in the movie as Elinor Dashwood, with Kate Winslet co-starring as Elinor’s sister Marianne. Thompson won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay and was nominated for the best actress prize.
In Becoming Meg Dashwood, Thompson will lend her voice to Margaret Dashwood, the youngest of the three sisters. Also starring will be Erin Doherty (The Crown), Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer), Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), and Imelda Staunton (Downton Abbey).
The drama is written by Rebecca Humphries, the actor who wrote the 2022 memoir Why Did You Stay? Jo Tyabji directs the drama, which will feature music by Natasha Khan, better known as Bat for Lashes.
Humphries shared news of the project on Instagram, writing, “Not quite sure how to put this, but I got to write a sequel to Sense & Sensibility for Emma Thompson to star in….It’s erotic, political, full of female rage and widens Austen’s world to the kinds of places she was never exposed to.”
Becoming Meg Dashwood is scheduled for release on October 6.
