Amazon MGM Studios has dropped a trailer for its upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity.
Hoover’s bestselling novel, self-published in 2018 and reissued by Grand Central in 2021, follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who is hired by a man named Jeremy Crawford to complete unfinished books by Verity, his injured wife. Lowen soon discovers the draft of an autobiography that contains disturbing secrets.
The film adaptation is written by Nick Antosca (Cape Fear) and directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick). Anne Hathaway stars as Verity, while Dakota Johnson plays Lowen and Josh Hartnett portrays Jeremy.
The trailer opens with Hartnett saying to Johnson, “You must have questions.” Johnson responds, “Why can’t your wife finish her book series?”
Hartnett introduces Johnson to Hathaway, who is catatonic in a bed. “Doctors don’t think she’ll ever walk or talk again,” he says.
Later, Johnson holds a thumb drive engraved with Verity’s initials. In a voiceover, Hathaway says, “This is my confession. My autobiography. A writer’s words should be honest and bloody and a little bit terrifying….I was his drug, and he was mine.”
Verity is slated to premiere in theaters on Oct. 2.
