Tough, inquisitive, and forthright. Breakout African-born actress Noma Dumezweni perfectly captures the voice and personality of chimney sweep Anglet Sutonga. The lithe 17-year-old defies her family, elders, mobsters, and an apartheid-like culture to return a luminous blue beacon to her fair city. STEEPLEJACK is a wonderfully strange young adult novel that draws inspiration from such divergent influences as magic realism, Charles Dickens, noir detective fiction, and African colonial history. Dumezweni’s singularly haunting vocal presence makes the characters and story even more immediate and compelling. STEEPLEJACK turns out to be Dumezweni’s first audiobook narration. Let’s hope we hear more from her soon.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
