When Her Majesty accidentally discovers a mobile library frequenting Buckingham Palace, she feels obliged to borrow a book. Under the tutelage of a kitchen worker named Norman, an enthusiast of gay writers, the Queen develops an unexpected passion for reading. Norman, elevated to the Queen's amanuensis, selects numerous texts to feed her voracious appetite. However, when she attempts to engage ordinary folk and heads of state in literary discussions, she is disturbed by their flat-eyed stares. Her advisors worry that she's growing senile. Eventually, her books are hidden, mysteriously lost in transit, or blown up by overcautious security personnel. Alan Bennett's narration is every bit as delicious as his wit. Listeners will have a field day with this droll peek into alleged palace reading practices. An absolute delight!

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
