Gisela Chìpe does a beautiful job narrating this touching--and at times hilarious--novel about fatherhood. The story takes place in Maipú, Chile, and shifts between the 1990s and the present day, centering on aspiring poet Gonzalo and his stepson, Vicente. Gonzalo helps raise Vicente for several years but suddenly goes to New York. Later, when Gonzalo returns to Chile, he reconnects with Vicente, now a young adult. Vicente, once a precocious child, wants to become a poet. The bond between stepfather and stepson is touching. Curiously, a story that focuses on two men is narrated by a woman. Chìpe does an impressive job of giving each character a distinct voice. She masterfully switches from English to English with a Spanish accent to Spanish with no accent.

Narrator Christine Lakin gives a delightful performance of this sports romance about three up-and-coming female tennis athletes competing at Wimbledon and finding love. Indiana is fresh off her win at the French Open and is looking to find love with Jack. Penny is hoping to overcome an ankle injury in time to compete, with the support of the love of her life, Alex. Jasmine is the underdog hoping to make a name for herself. Lakin artfully distinguishes between each female heroine, creating the perfect variation of tone and nuance to convey their doubts, desires, and dreams.

In this fascinating coming-of-age portrait, Thomas Black Bull's journey from the child, Bear's Brother, to the fearsome rodeo rider, Killer Tom Black, is painted with compassion and insight. Forced to learn the White Man's ways, Tom reaches adulthood consumed by rage. Read with great vigor by Norman Dietz, the recording bursts with the energy of rodeo circuit and transports the listener to the southwest. The accurate portrayal of Tom's Ute ancestry and way of life, the sorrow and frustration of losing his heritage, and his angry retaliation at the world make this an excellent listening choice for adults and teenagers. It would also be a wonderful addition to high school units on the Native American experience.
