Before committing suicide, a deranged Scot gives Richard a map of “the beach,” an Eden on an island near Thailand. Richard and a French couple find the place and begin a communal life--of work, sun and drugs--with about 30 others until a series of events causes it all to unravel. Michael Page adeptly captures Michael’s world-weary cynicism, as well as the often extreme emotions of the beach’s inhabitants. His first-person narration, while on target in conveying Richard’s personality, also manages to differentiate the other characters--no small task. This is a trip no listener will forget.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
