Mma Ramotswe tells us in her charming and familiar voice that in heaven cattle appear in many beautiful colors. Fans of this series (this is Book 19) enjoy following the life of Mma Ramotswe, a Botswanan lady detective who uses common sense, quick wits, and a natural sensitivity to human needs to solve problems. Audiobook listeners will recognize the voice of Mma Ramotswe and, indeed, all the other engaging African voices that have been brought to life by Lisette Lecat throughout the series. This particular installment lacks the clever detection observed in earlier books, although the characters, as portrayed by Lecat, resonate with dignity and cultural nuances.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
