Narrator Kyla Garcia captures the vacation setting and intrigue of this light summer mystery. The summer before Miranda starts eighth grade, her parents send her to August Isle, Florida, to stay with her mom's oldest friend, who has a daughter her age, Samira. Miranda explores the place where her mother vacationed as a girl and finds a new friend in Sammy. But mysteries abound, and Miranda starts to uncover secrets about her mother's shadowy past. Garcia gives Miranda a calm voice that contrasts with Sammy's gushing enthusiasm. While Aunt Clare and Miranda's mom both have similar mature-sounding voices, other characters are given more distinct vocal markers, including the slight Indian accent of Samira's father, the Southern drawls of the locals, and even a Portuguese-speaking parrot.

A sensitive performance.
Deepa is a precocious 12-year-old girl in remission from leukemia. Under the tutelage of her uncle, a house call doctor, she becomes involved in solving teen tennis player Taio's puzzling medical mystery. Deepa is unsure of herself, but she’s ready to get back to middle school after a year away for treatment. Narrator Soneela Nankani depicts Deepa's desire to be more than the "sick kid" while navigating her youthful insecurities and the social challenges of middle school. Nankani also ably portrays Deepa's growing confidence in herself as she uses her own experience with illness to help figure out what’s wrong with Taio.

Jeff Ebner's youthful, enthusiastic voice immediately pulls listeners into this fun-filled summer adventure. Eleven-year-old Felix and his neighbor, Marigold, find a mysterious wooden box that contains a field recorder and a coded message that subsequently sends them on a fantastically sound-filled scavenger hunt. The inclusion of actual sound effects—an ice cream truck’s jingle, a barking dog, bird song, and more—throughout the audiobook enhances the listening experience. The music, the voices, and the clues as Felix and Marigold run all over town are irresistible. The story’s conclusion features an unexpected reconnection.
