Three accomplished narrators skillfully present this thriller, which is replete with false leads and frequent changes in locale. Harrison and Eden live a life of privilege until their 8-year-old daughter Gabby is critically injured. The official investigation is stonewalled as everyone questioned seems to be lying and secretive. In Henry Rowley’s portrayal, Cornwall police officer Carter is dedicated but naïve. He is supervised by newly hired Chief Bird, who has a checkered past and connections to both victims and suspects. Bel Powley delivers her with confidence and wit. Richard Armitage makes Harrison sound truly frightening. Majestic descriptions of the seaside and outstanding sound effects provide some relief from the tension.

Katie Leung takes us back in time with her passionate narration of this sequel and second Allie Burns mystery, which also works beautifully as a stand-alone listen. Leung breathes new life into the year 1989, when events in Scotland and Germany included the Lockerbie Memorial, the AIDS epidemic, and the continued existence of the Berlin Wall. The story centers around Burns, a Scottish reporter who is trying to learn the truth behind a compromised hospital study while solving a kidnapping and a murder. Leung flawlessly performs a Scottish brogue, a clipped German accent, and a melodious British accent without skipping a beat. Listeners will relive the close of the 1980s--or feel like they've experienced the period for the first time.

Her interpretations of the chemistry between the couple and the humorous banter between the detectives are especially noteworthy.
