As Brooke learns that her mother has murdered her abusive father, narrator Stephanie Einstein portrays Brooke's rapidly changing feelings: panic, confusion, relief that her mother is alive, and shock at viewing her father's body. Roller-coaster feelings continue throughout the story, and Einstein reflects them all. She mirrors the emotions of a young woman who has witnessed abuse most of her life and has been traumatized by the murder. Einstein voices Brooke's complex reactions as her mother goes to prison, the family disintegrates, and a friendship deepens into love before Brooke's lies threaten its destruction. Einstein's convincing portrayal of the character stops this from being merely an audiobook about issues.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
