ANTITRUST

TAKING ON MONOPOLY POWER FROM THE GILDED AGE TO THE DIGITAL AGE

Senator Amy Klobuchar delivers the introduction, first chapter, and conclusion of her audiobook with intellectual confidence. The familiarity of her speech helps connect this richly detailed economics lesson with the likable Minnesota lawmaker. Nan McNamara narrates the remainder of the audio with more vocal color than the senator and equal skill with her often complex sentences. The interpretive skills of both women deserve credit for making such an esoteric topic sound accessible and absorbing. Senator Klobuchar sees the government's fight against monopolies as part of the broader struggle between concentrated wealth and ordinary citizens, between the power-hungry rich and the moderating forces of government oversight. This is a graduate-level broadside on what government should do to balance capitalism with the needs of consumers.

This audiobook deals with everything from the historic investments that led to world-dominating companies, such as the Chinese technology company Tencent, to predicting the products and services of the future. An audiobook of such complexity requires a narrator who can handle the task, and David Thorpe manages it admirably. Thorpe uses his masterly voice, which sits somewhere between that of a BBC World Service presenter and an easy, relaxed Home Counties accent, to guide listeners through a sea of numbers, acronyms, and terms such as YP, RPS, and market cap. Rather than simply reading, Thorpe presents the work with excitement and enthusiasm, and this enjoyment transfers to the listener.

      An engaging experience.
