SPLINTER EFFECT

A SPLINTER EFFECT, BOOK 1

Indiana Jones meets "Quantum Leap" in this thrilling new science fiction series, splendidly performed by Roger Wayne. Twenty years after a failed attempt at going back in time to retrieve a long-lost gold menorah and leaving behind his mentee/partner, Aaron, Dr. Rabbit Ward tries again--this time in 535 C.E. Constantinople. Once there, he establishes some connections in the community and becomes a temporary partner with Helen, another time traveler who is also seeking the menorah. Wayne makes Rabbit crackle in his delivery of this compelling adventure. He captures the tension between Rabbit and Helen while also delivering the goods as Rabbit outsmarts Roman soldiers, cleverly saves a new friend's life, and confronts a powerful enemy--all without changing events in the future.

The past cannot be changed, but what if you could travel to the past to view an event in your own history, or to attend a historical event? This is the premise Moriarty creates with a Time Travel Agency in Sydney, Australia. Kellie Jones ably performs chapters featuring Anna and Jade—both single mothers of teenage daughters. Jones expresses the joy Anna takes in literature and her uncertainty in her parenting abilities as well as Jade’s grief at the loss of her sister and disbelief that her daughter might be a bully. Mitchell Bourke’s excellent performance conveys Teddy’s confusion regarding the breakup of his marriage and his visits to the past for an explanation. A particular highlight is Bourke’s narration of the hilarious and heartwarming texts between Teddy and his friends.

Jones and Bourke provide fizz and joy, plus charming Australian accents, to bump up this fun world a notch.

Allyson Ryan thoughtfully narrates this reflection on the temptations of tangible nostalgia. Single and newly fired, Ashley has nothing going for her when she spots an ad for a job at cutting-edge technology company Retro. As a Time Travel Agent, Ash guides wealthy guests on excursions into the past, fulfilling their fantasies of bachelor nights in the Old West and birthday parties in the Roaring '20s. Early on, Ryan gives Ash the tones of a person ground down by repeated disappointments. As Ash stretches her acting skills and meets exciting new people, her voice becomes more self-assured. A startling discovery about Retro’s founder forces her to consider the impact that visiting the past may have on her future.
