Granger has created a traditional English mystery (right down to the Boxing Day hunt) set in modern times. Judith Boyd meets the challenge admirably as she enlivens the gentry, cleaning lady, stable hands, and barroom brawlers. However, amatuer sleuth Meredith is her best creation with her sweet, emotive voice. Boyd even takes on a croaking sound after Meredith is choked as she and her friend Chief Inspector Markby encounter their culprit. Her narrative skill also keeps the relatively long text and heavily peopled story on track. An excellent choice for those who like their murder mysteries nice and cozy.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
