Narrator January LaVoy gives a compelling performance of a love story that transcends time. She transitions effortlessly between two characters: Kate Wilson, a determined young American, and Julian Lawrence, a stereotypical English gentleman. LaVoy maintains clear, crisp enunciation, intonations, and accents for the British characters. In addition, she switches from male to female characters easily and makes it easy to discern one character from the next. Subtle changes in her pacing and tone capture the time shifts and the changes in characters’ personalities as they find themselves transported between modern America and WWI-era France. LaVoy’s smooth narrative voice makes this intriguing romance even more enjoyable.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
