Nikki Patel is enchanting, fearsome, and hilarious as she narrates this story about a family reunion that includes a body count. Listeners meet the Swifts, who use a dictionary to name their children (and describe their personalities), including Shenanigan--the ringleader of the kids--and Uncle Maelstrom, who leads the action. The reunion doubles as an opportunity for the family to search for an old mansion's hidden treasure. Most exhilarating is encountering the dialogue and behavior of each character--which, of course, fit their names. Because the Swifts live all over the globe, Patel's skill with accents and dramatic pronunciations is engaging and atmospheric. Puns, wordplay, and definitions abound, with multiple meanings adding to listeners' fun--and education. Since the saga is conversation rich, audio significantly enhances the sterling writing and delivery.

A sensitive performance.
Deepa is a precocious 12-year-old girl in remission from leukemia. Under the tutelage of her uncle, a house call doctor, she becomes involved in solving teen tennis player Taio's puzzling medical mystery. Deepa is unsure of herself, but she’s ready to get back to middle school after a year away for treatment. Narrator Soneela Nankani depicts Deepa's desire to be more than the "sick kid" while navigating her youthful insecurities and the social challenges of middle school. Nankani also ably portrays Deepa's growing confidence in herself as she uses her own experience with illness to help figure out what’s wrong with Taio.

Jeff Ebner's youthful, enthusiastic voice immediately pulls listeners into this fun-filled summer adventure. Eleven-year-old Felix and his neighbor, Marigold, find a mysterious wooden box that contains a field recorder and a coded message that subsequently sends them on a fantastically sound-filled scavenger hunt. The inclusion of actual sound effects—an ice cream truck’s jingle, a barking dog, bird song, and more—throughout the audiobook enhances the listening experience. The music, the voices, and the clues as Felix and Marigold run all over town are irresistible. The story’s conclusion features an unexpected reconnection.
