With a silvery smooth voice, narrator Lynnette Freeman conveys the essential message in Jenkins’s Blessings series: The essence of romance is family. This small-town romance, appropriate for teen and adult listeners, is set in Henry Adams, Kansas. Featured characters are single mom Gemma, who cares for two abandoned children she found on the side of the road, and restaurateur Rocky, who copes with the drama of his employees and customers. Freeman nails the dialogue with natural-sounding rhythms and emotions, smoothly producing the voices of the entire town. She drops down into a deeper register for the male characters, like Rocky’s fiancé, Jack, and switches gears with a higher pitch for females, like Gemma’s new daughter, Jasmine. Jenkins and Freeman truly are a blessing.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
