The easiest way to characterize these mystery stories set in medieval England is to note their similarity in content and tone to Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael series. For audiobook listeners, the resemblance is heightened by the fact that Stephen Thorne has recorded several of the Cadfael novels. Thorne is a seasoned professional, secure in his craft and an effortless pleasure to listen to. His reading has complete conviction, yet it never loses touch with the fact that this is entertainment, not high art. But the recording is very good stuff of its kind: an amiable companion to the commuter or jogger.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
