Scottish narrator Cathleen McCarron's performance of this Glasgow-based procedural will keep listeners glued to their headphones. Her narration reflects the story--intense when appropriate, lighter when called for. She is excellent with voices, injecting personality into even minor characters. In this 12th series entry, Detective Inspector Colin Anderson and Detective Sergeant Freddie Costello are investigating the death of a young woman when they are reassigned to handle a nasty case. An elderly man has been tortured and killed in his home, setting off social media rumors about pedophilia. Meanwhile, Anderson's beloved dog dies, and Costello is accused of stealing from a neighbor. The audiobook is bleak in some spots but offers humor as well. McCarron handles both with ease. A really fine performance.

In this third addition to The Martini Club series, narrator Hillary Huber masterfully performs the returning characters plus many new players—the good and the just pretending to be good. Martini Club member and former CIA agent Ingrid Slocum is managing a conference on potential global health disasters. When one of the prominent speakers, a Russian defector, is murdered, the Martini Club members are forced to return to their spy roots, sending Ingrid and former and current colleagues on a precarious adventure. With the assistance of the local chief of police, they investigate a series of murders mysteriously tied to a botched operation from their past.

Narrator David Threlfall’s deep, gruff voice seems like the perfect match for DS Declan Miller, whose continual banter and sarcastic sense of humor will entertain listeners while he drives his colleagues batty. A murder case that may or may not have actually been murder sets off a domino effect, which includes a real murder, a kidnapping, and the involvement of the head of a crime family. Listeners also get to eavesdrop on conversations between Miller and his late wife, who continues to cheer and guide him. While Threlfall, through accents, pace, and tone, is highly effective at performing the male characters, his female voices lack plausibility.
