POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE thrust its main character, Suzanne Vale, into the public eye. Vale is back, edgy and in the throes of self-medication for her roller-coaster existence as the single mother of a young daughter. The author is likely the best narrator to do justice to the irreverent and dark humor of this book. She plumbs the depths of Vale's depression, her manic moments, and her attempts to find some way to function meaningfully between them. Fisher's affection for Vale and her struggles to remain sane mean there is always some light and humor in Vale's otherwise harsh world.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
