Narrator Natalie Naudus brings a quiet intensity to this genre-crossing audiobook featuring August, a prickly loner who tries to lose herself in New York City but instead finds purpose, community, and unconventional romance. The latter involves kindhearted, butch Jane, who overrides August's emotional barriers while facing a more serious hitch: Jane's from the 1970s, trapped on the Q train in a time slip. It's a complicated setup, but Naudus's smooth pacing keeps listeners on board, as do her well-timed snark and tender, unabashed love scenes. Character voices range from broad to subtle, in keeping with the story's colorful cast and sci-fi twists. Collectively, these elements cohere into an immersive and utterly beguiling performance, the perfect fit for a tale of queer joy, first love, and self-discovery.

Accents play a key role in this historical romance, and narrator Will Watt is masterful delivering them. Titus Pilcrow unexpectedly finds himself inheriting a great fortune. As he attempts to adjust to his new lifestyle and elevated position in London society, he crosses paths with the charming Comte de La Motte, whom Watt performs with an irresistible French accent. They become friends, and while Titus suspects that Nico is after a share of his money, he’s so endeared by Nico that he’d gladly give him anything he asked for. Watt effortlessly inhabits Titus and Nico’s perspectives as their mutual attraction blooms and secrets eventually come to light, all while switching rapid-fire between English and French accents.

Fierce tennis rivals, Spaniard Inés Costa (portrayed by Elena Rey) and American Chloe Murphy (narrated by Lindsey Dorcus), go from enemies to lovers in this third series installment. When Inés’ career falters and hot-tempered Chloe’s on-court behavior threatens her own viability, the two unexpectedly form a mutually beneficial partnership throughout the Grand Slam circuit. The dual narrative talents of Dorcus and Rey enliven dialogue, forming genuine connections between the leads. They also infuse the international assemblage of competitors with an array of Australian, British, Spanish, and American accents. While their performances are mostly in sync as they alternate characterizing each woman’s emotional journey, they depart slightly with Inés’ Spanish accent—light in Rey’s case and distinctly applied in Dorcus’.
