DAIRY QUEEN

Fifteen-year-old D.J. lives in Red Bend, Wisconsin, in a family in which all the boys play football. She’s a basketball star. When her father breaks his hip, D.J. must give up sports and do all the milking, mucking, and mowing on their farm. During the summer D.J. trains the quarterback from rival Hawley High and discovers that football is her passion. Natalie Moore does an outstanding job creating such a likable D.J. that listeners will hang on every word. Moore sounds like a teenager. Her voice is characterized by sarcastic introspection and uncertainty, as well as an authentic questioning rise at the end of many a sentence.

With a gifted narration, Brenda Arteaga-Walsh shifts between Spanish and English to portray the changing thoughts and emotions of 17-year-old Ezzie Ramos. On the precipice of college choices, Ezzie discovers a surprising letter of resignation written by her biologist father shortly before his death. Determined to uncover truths hidden by the silence of her Mami and Abuelita, she volunteers at the nonprofit garden he started. Arteaga-Walsh expresses Ezzie’s increasing passion for art and writing, which conflict with her family’s view that she should enter the sciences, and traces Ezzie's developing relationship with the once-hated Gabe McCallister. When Gabe shows himself to be loving and eager to help, Ezzie finally opens up.

Narrator Kira Fixx contemplatively presents the thoughtful inner monologues of autistic, art-loving 18-year-old Nora. As she arrives in France with her mother’s ashes and a plan to carry them to a beloved location, Nora reflects on years of her mother’s counsel about how to respond to the world by masking her natural behaviors. When she escapes an attack and ends up going through a portal that transports her to 1946, she finally learns to express her authentic self. At Saint-Alban, an asylum, Nora finds acceptance and enlightening perspectives about how her mother’s fears have limited her life.

Elements of art, neurodivergence, historical fiction, fantasy, love, loss, and grief blend into a compelling audiobook. (Fiction. 14-18)
