Nikki Massoud imbues relic seller Loulie, the Midnight Merchant, with confidence and inner strength that is occasionally undercut by nervousness. Massoud keeps Loulie at a simmer as she is forced to join the relic hunt. Sean Rohani captures Prince Mazen's youth and eagerness for adventure. Rohani keeps listeners spellbound through the Prince's storytelling and also captures the essence of the chatter in the streets, where djinn are a hot topic. Rasha Zamamiri as Aisha, one of 40 thieves, keeps menace in her voice, leaving room for a hint of mercy. The multiple voices shift often, but that won't keep listeners from immersing themselves in this story's world-building.

The gods might be sleeping in this vibrant fantasy novel, but Joe Eyre keeps listeners wide awake with an electric performance. As a mortedant, Irody Hasp reads dead people’s thoughts. When a simple job turns deadly, however, Hasp gets accused of murder and must work quickly to avoid the gallows. As he hunts down the real killer alongside his spunky new apprentice and a giant warrior guard, he soon unveils a larger and more sinister plot. The poor of the lower levels of the tiered city are threatened, and Hasp and his newfound friends must thwart the bad guys before the gods awaken. Hasp’s world is equally odd and engaging, and Eyre explores every inch, providing various voices to round out an eclectic group of characters.

Sorrel is an orphan and, because of her mystical abilities, an outcast in her small village. She is tasked with crossing the Badlands to return a queen’s crown in the hope that she will be able to protect the land from the demons. Accompanying Sorrel on the voyage is a mercenary known as Merc. Nielsen gives Sorrel an ethereal quality, which suits her character. As Sorrel comes into her power, Nielsen reflects this growth by adding strength to her voice. Sorrel and Merc face many trials on their journey, and Nielsen easily builds tension as danger mounts.
