Count your blessings--you could be a Lum, the death-stalked family of this intriguing novel. Lums don't die in conventional ways either. Their ends come at the hands of ice cream trucks, cheeseburgers, and Nazis. Narrator James Yaegashi lovingly renders this story in an understated tone that fits the novel. His methodical pace and easy style nudge the action along and keep the book interesting. His deep voice is soothing and cool, and he makes dialogue sound as though it comes from real people. He runs into trouble only while trying to evoke convincing female characters. Unfortunately, he misses the mark, with one of the elderly females sounding like Marge Simpson. This is a minor issue though.

Eiden's lively tone gives Jack a subtle flair and confidence that make him easy to forgive and to love.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
