A superb ensemble cast keeps the characters clearly delineated in this harrowing story of abuse, alcoholism, and murder-suicide in an idyllic New Hampshire village. Soon the mourners begin to look like suspects as forensics point up discrepancies in people’s stories. Mark Bramhall is perfect as the overwhelmed pastor—stodgy, serious, and riddled with guilt by his lack of faith. Susan Denaker is utterly believable as author Heather, a woman whose tragic life causes her to rely on angels. Rebecca Lowman shines as the daughter left behind to pick up the pieces after her parents’ deaths, and Kathe Mazer is appropriately hard-boiled as the state attorney trying to catch someone in a cover-up.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
