Hollywood and Washington never fail to spark satire. Wonder why? A feared TV commentator loses all credibility after his alien abduction. However, the little green men come from a rogue government agency, not outer space, as part of an ongoing, 50-year-old hoax. Complications, needless to say, ensue. The excellence of this tape stems from the playable text and felicitous casting. Possessing just the right wise-guy quality, narrator Mark Linn-Baker always sounds like he's on the verge of laryngitis. What range he has he uses well. What he lacks, he makes up for in focus and in the fun he shares with listeners. The producers use a pinch of musical underscoring--a minor distraction in an otherwise immensely listenable offering.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
