It's hard to understand why Lee Fiora of Indiana actually stays on for all four years at the prestigious Ault School of Massachusetts. She is the quintessential outsider without quite enough brains, and certainly not the beauty, to break into the cliques of wealth that surround her. Julie Dretzin starts out with a core of kindness and understanding for this angst-ridden teenager, but Lee Fiora 's time at Ault is not sufficiently entertaining to hold the listener's interest. Though Dretzin flirts with East Coast and Latino accents, she does not emphasize them. Since the book is supposed to be droll, the narration underlines the dullness and savageness of boarding schools.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
