KAMALA'S WAY

AN AMERICAN LIFE

Anyone who watched the inauguration already knows the outline of Kamala Harris's life story. A former California senator, she's the first person of Afro-Caribbean and East Indian descent to be elected to the office of vice president. This audiobook seeks to fill in some of the details. Soneela Nankani offers an even narration. Her tone suits the material, and her pace is good, making the material easy to follow. However, the author, a West Coast newspaper reporter, includes numerous anecdotes and backstories about tangential figures and California politics that slow the narrative, especially for listeners from other states. Overall, though, listeners will come away with a deeper understanding of this groundbreaking political figure.

THE ART OF BECOMING A CITIZEN

    A MEMOIR

A doyenne of American literature, Godwin, now 89, adds to her distinguished body of work.

Rosemary Benson has narrated Godwin’s work before, and she conveys the contemplative and appalled tone of this brief memoir. Her performance reveals the author’s disappointment in the country’s state of political affairs during the 2024 election. Godwin sees then-candidate Trump as an emblem of corruption, and she painstakingly analyzes his debate with Kamala Harris and the idea of citizenship, quoting liberally from Brian Tangury’s blog Working-Class Scribbler. Other sections show the arc of Godwin’s long career, recalling her life in the 1960s working for the U.S. Travel Service and her ill-considered marriage.

Paul Bellantoni’s narration is a treat. This audiobook revisits many of Jane Fonda’s movie successes and some of her lesser films before offering details of her evolution into a force for good. While some attention is paid to the multifaceted Fonda’s early life, the focus is on her political films, including her memorable work in such films as The China Syndrome and Coming Home. Bellantoni’s narration becomes most engaging as he recounts her growth from sex kitten to “Hanoi Jane” to workout queen to political activist. His energy intensifies for anecdotes about her confrontations with Hollywood producers and Washington power brokers.

Bellantoni’s rich baritone shines the spotlight on a remarkable woman capable of constantly reinventing herself.
