The threads of seemingly unconnected lives and events are woven into a story as complex as it is captivating. In particular, the plot involves Wendell deVries, a small-town movie projectionist, his daughter, and his granddaughter. Carrington MacDuffie’s smooth voice and equally smooth pace reflect the singing career that preceded her work as a narrator. She wisely avoids the use of accents, allowing the clarity of the writing and the distinctive voice of each quirky character to advance the plot and identify the speakers. A well-written story and an engaging presentation combine to give the listener a satisfying experience.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
