Waking the Moon begins at the University of the Archangels and St. John the Divine, where the supernatural follow the lives of the main characters, Sweeney, Angelica, Annie, Oliver and Baby Jo. This Gothic tale of goddesses and sorcery is ably read by Laura Esterman. Her ethereal voice is well matched to the tale. She narrates in a slow, expressive style, which becomes more animated as the strange events unfold. Conversations are easy to follow as Esterman switches from throaty-voiced Annie to sophisticated Angelica and back to the narration. Even the unusual chanting of the cult of Atheum Lunarsa is forcefully and credibly presented.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
