Narrator Amielynn Abellera provides a cartoonish bunch of characters for this diverse, scary story. Seventh grader Harper Raine isn't happy that her parents have moved her family from New York City to Washington, DC, and her discovery that their new house is haunted isn't helping. As Harper's 4-year-old brother's behavior becomes increasingly beastly, the dark history of the house and the gaps in Harper's memories surrounding near deadly accidents in her past converge. Suddenly, the paranormal presents answers via her estranged Korean grandmother. Abellera's pacing is sometimes too measured, making it seem like this audiobook is aiming for a younger audience than the level of gore indicates. Her performance smooths out as the emotion and stakes overtake the listener in the race to the bone-chilling climax.

A sensitive performance.
Deepa is a precocious 12-year-old girl in remission from leukemia. Under the tutelage of her uncle, a house call doctor, she becomes involved in solving teen tennis player Taio's puzzling medical mystery. Deepa is unsure of herself, but she’s ready to get back to middle school after a year away for treatment. Narrator Soneela Nankani depicts Deepa's desire to be more than the "sick kid" while navigating her youthful insecurities and the social challenges of middle school. Nankani also ably portrays Deepa's growing confidence in herself as she uses her own experience with illness to help figure out what’s wrong with Taio.

Jeff Ebner's youthful, enthusiastic voice immediately pulls listeners into this fun-filled summer adventure. Eleven-year-old Felix and his neighbor, Marigold, find a mysterious wooden box that contains a field recorder and a coded message that subsequently sends them on a fantastically sound-filled scavenger hunt. The inclusion of actual sound effects—an ice cream truck’s jingle, a barking dog, bird song, and more—throughout the audiobook enhances the listening experience. The music, the voices, and the clues as Felix and Marigold run all over town are irresistible. The story’s conclusion features an unexpected reconnection.
