Larry Foley, bank robber, breaks out of the joint. Gets some henchmen to abet him. Falls for the federal marshall, who just happens to be at the right place at the right time. The author is at his best. So is narrator George Guidall. His voice shines like a beacon, illuminating the book's dark souls and deeds. Guidall demands that we notice the irony, wit and coolness of the text. His elastic voice creates characters with their own memorable peculiarities, and his deliberate pacing works beautifully with Leonard's economical writing style. Every joke is clear, every twist is surprising, every herring is red.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
