Lillian, chef/owner of a small restaurant, is at the core of a diverse group of customers, employees, and cooking students, each of whom is dealing with endings and beginnings. Narrator Cassandra Campbell's soothing voice sets the mood for this novel told from multiple points of view. While maintaining a consistent tonal quality throughout, Campbell changes her expressive interpretation to fit the personality and thoughts of each main character. She’s convincing when portraying the young adults, both male and female, and is especially impressive in conveying the worsening dementia of one of the older women. Listeners will be fully invested in this story about chosen families and friendships spiced with evocative descriptions of the tastes and smells of good food.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
