Fred Berman gives a fine narration of Gorenberg's detailed account of the struggle between Allied and Axis intelligence services during the war for Africa. Looking back at the prewar actions of the many characters in this account--Brits, Italians, Germans, Poles, and Americans, among others--one realizes how much pure luck, as well as competence and determination, went into their success. While the account focuses on the war in North Africa, it also goes into efforts in East Africa and the Levant. Berman's standard American baritone is clear in delivery and suitably expressive. His pacing is near perfect and makes this fascinating account a joy to hear.

Dozens of overlooked heroines are profiled, such as Elizabeth Freeman, an enslaved woman who filed a lawsuit to obtain her freedom, or Emily Warren Roebling, an engineer who saved the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill. The writing style is straightforward and narrative-based, making it easy for listeners to follow. O’Donnell varies her tone to suit the material, reflecting intensity, disbelief, humor, and admiration. The sketches are generally short, making this a perfect audiobook for people with short windows of opportunity for listening.
